“Athens Summit 2009-The Road to Copenhagen”
Hosted by Financial Times Global Events in association with the Institute for Climate and Energy Security (I4CENSE) and C&C International Group of Companies, the Athens Summit 2009 was held in Athens between 12th and 13th May 2009, under the auspices of H.E Dr. Karolos Papoulias, President of the Hellenic Republic.

The Summit brought together more that 800 senior governmental officials, corporate leaders, financiers and experts staging a unique meeting point for international knowledge concerning the twin goals of energy security and climate change with an eye to the UN Copenhagen Climate Change Conference.
Among the Summit’s opening day highlights were Mr. Dimitris Sioufa’s speech, President of the Hellenic Parliament, on Euro-Mediterranean Energy, Mr. George A. Papandreou’s analysis, President of the Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement, on what the Mediterranean agenda for the Copenhagen could and should include as well as the two crucial sessions on Greek energy policies organised by the Hellenic Ministry of Development.
The second day of the Conference was equally important featuring the highly expected presentation of Mr. Saif Al Islam Al Qadhafi, son of Muammar Al-Gaddafi, regarding the energy potential of desert heat and wind and the speeches on Financial Aspects of energy and climate security developments addressed by senior representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the European Investment Bank and the European Investment Fund and others.
All in all, participants were impressed by a very successful Summit in terms of organisational management, speakers’ portfolio, thematic streams covered and high-rank networking.

As Charles Darwin pointed out it is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent but the one most adaptable to change. It is time to change current practices, as far as the environment is concerned.
